The OAC Christmas Party — A Holiday Tradition 40 Years in the Making
For over 40 years, one of HJWL's most beloved traditions has been hosting an annual Christmas party for students at the Ottawa Area Center (OAC) — a public school serving children and young adults with significant cognitive and physical disabilities.
Each year, HJWL members come together to create a celebration full of warmth, gifts, and genuine joy. For many of these students, it's a highlight of their year, and for the parents and aides who support them every day, it's a reminder that their community sees and cares for their children.
It's one of the most humbling things we do, and it remains one of our proudest.
Community Service Projects — Showing Up However We're Needed
HJWL members roll up their sleeves throughout the year for whatever the community needs. That might mean scrubbing walls and tidying up a local non-profit's space, organizing supplies, face painting, planning games, preparing food, or simply sitting with a child and spending time together.
It's not always glamorous work — but it's real, it's personal, and it matters. We go where we're needed and do what needs doing, because supporting children in our community sometimes means showing up with a paintbrush, and sometimes it just means showing up.
