Holland Junior Welfare League service projects allow members to directly help in the welfare of children. From working with children at the Ottawa Area Center to performing puppet shows through 'Kids on the Block', hundreds of children are reach and HJWL hearts are touched.
Winter Wearables: This service
project was developed in 1998-1999, presenting the local schools
in the Greater Holland area with winter wearables for the elementary
students who needed them. This year we donated hats, underwear,
sweatpants, socks and mittens to over 15 schools in the Holland
and West Ottawa. The demand is overwhelming and we presented
over 600 items to children in our area.
OAC Christmas Party: One of HJWL's service projects is the Ottawa Area Center (OAC) Christmas Party. The OAC is a school for developmentally disabled children and young adults through age 26. This event is typically held on the first Friday in December. This is a wonderful kick-off to the holiday season. Santa delivers the gifts for the children in attendance. The students enjoy cookies, punch, participating in games and telling Santa their Christmas wishes. They take home their gifts, prizes, balloons and best of all a picture of them with Santa. This is a heart warming project which is enjoyed by all!

OAC Spring Event: Each spring, HJWL participates at a spring carnival given by the Ottawa Area Center (OAC) for developmentally disabled children and young adults. This past year, HJWL members made paper mache face masks and hand molds which were then painted and decorated by the OAC children.
Day Care Books: This
is just one of the many service projects that Holland
Junior Welfare League provides each year. This service
project is required participation for first year
members, but is open to all members who might be
interested. HJWL purchases and wraps approx. 400 500 age appropriate books to be given to preschool children attending the Head Start program at Hope Reformed Church of Holland. This book is given to them on their birthday or half-birthday. For many of these children, this book is not only their first "very own" book
but maybe the only birthday present they will receive.
Our hope is not only encouraging a love of reading
and books, but to also promote family participation,
such as a parent or family member reading to the
child.
May Day Baskets: HJWL assists the Center for Women in Transition with the May Day Basket Campaign. Members donate items for the women and their children of our community who, because of difficulty at home, have been forced to seek shelter. Many are in need of a new start and do not have the resources to purchase even the basics for themselves or their children. The baskets are delivered on May Day (May 1st).
The Boys and Girls Club of Holland: The
Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holland is affiliated
with Boys and Girls Clubs of America. The Holland
facility was opened in 1999 with the goal to
provide a positive place for children and teens.
The mission statement is "to inspire and empower all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens." Core
programs include character and leadership development,
education and career development, health and
life skills, the arts, sports, fitness and
recreation. This Club is open to students from
1st grade to 12th grade after school every
week day.
Currently, members of the Holland Junior Welfare League are providing a volunteer service to assist with homework and school projects for students in the Education Room Wednesdays, from 4-5pm. It is a rewarding and appreciated service!!!
Kids on the Block: gangs,
violence, prejudice, and adjustment to
divorce...we present to schools, churches,
and other community organizations like
Holland Rescue at the Civic Center & Dutch
Village.
